The Quality Meat Scotland Assurance Scheme – Pigs (formerly known as the Scottish Pig Industry Initiative) was set up in 1990 to provide the Industry and Consumers alike with total assurance that animals, produced for the food chain, are reared to a stringent set of standards covering all aspects of animal welfare, food safety and general good practice
It is a condition of the scheme that pig units must:
-
receive veterinary advisory visits every three months to discuss ongoing health and welfare policy with a signed summary of the visit sent to QMSA – Pigs following each visit. Weaner/rearer and/or finishing units are required to have a vet visit at regular 6 monthly intervals.
-
participate in the Zoonosis National Control Plan for Salmonella (ZNCP) where applicable.
-
source feeds, supplements etc from manufacturers and merchants who are approved members of both the QMS Feed Assurance Scheme and of AIC’s Universal Feed Assurance Scheme or a proven equivalent.
-
source farm assured combinable crops i.e. produced by current members of Scottish Quality Crops (SQC) or equivalent.
