MAGB Malting Barley Grower Competition 2011
11 March 2011
Following the success of the competition in 2010, the Maltsters' Association of Great Britain (MAGB) is launching a new competition for 2011. All growers harvesting in 2011 in Scotland, England and Wales, who take pride in their malting barley are invited to enter.
Each year UK maltsters purchase nearly 2 million tonnes of malting barley to make 1.5 million tonnes of malt - in a sector worth around £600 million.
The competition will explore growers' understanding of the market and end user specifications, and their application of technical and business improvement skills. A panel of industry judges will visit applicants' farms in July, and make a final decision on the winner in October 2011 to take into account the marketing of the crop.
The two winners from Scotland and England and Wales will receive a cash prize of £200, an invitation to the annual MAGB luncheon in November and opportunities to visit local breweries or distilleries as appropriate. The two runners up will receive a cash prize of £100.
