Moving Farmers Markets Forward
23 April 2010
Moving Farmers Markets ForwardThe recent launch of the Scottish Farmers Markets Partnership (SFMP) illustrates how significant the sector has become since the launch of the first farmers market in Perth in 1999. The sector now has over 80 operating markets with more than 400 participating producers. Annual turnover is now estimated to be in the region of £20 million p.a.
SFQC is a key partner in this collaborative project working closely with SAOS, SAC and the Scottish Association of Farmers Markets. Project priorities and objectives will be discussed and agreed with a cross-sector industry group comprising other interested parties including NFUS, Scottish Crofting Foundation and SOPA.
This aim of this new partnership is to promote, support and build capacity for farmers' markets in Scotland on a sustainable basis. The project will comprise three core strands of activity: strategic development work; marketing and promotion; and communication, information and advice. The intention is to provide as much practical support as possible where resources allow. The development and implementation of the SFMP project will provide a strong platform for the expansion and development of farmers' markets in Scotland for the future. The funding made available will not only help to develop and grow farmers' markets around the country, but will ensure that efforts across groups are co-ordinated, and that opportunities to save costs through collaboration are maximised.
SFQC successfully secured funding from the Scottish Government to help fund a part-time support coordinator to work on this project. Sarah Milne has been appointed to this role. She starts work this month and will work alongside the National Development Officer, Douglas Watson. She will be responsible for improving communication links within the sector and between it and consumers, trade and other stakeholders. In addition she will help develop information and promotional resources to further enhance the marketing appeal of Farmers Markets.
