The approval scheme that helps local and regional food and drink producers supply their products to national and regional buyers.

SALSA is the Food Safety Certification Scheme for small to medium sized producers. 75-85% of members are small / family run businesses.

With the growing popularity of local and regionally sourced products among industry and consumers, the scheme provides national and regional retail and food service buyers with the confidence that SALSA approved businesses not only make fantastic products, but do so in a safe and legal manner.

SALSA is supported by the Food Standards Agency, DEFRA and by the majority of the UK's leading retailers and food service providers.

The web-based scheme aims to be:

  • Reliable: accepted by UK buyers as fit for purpose and meeting their due diligence needs
  • Affordable: making ‘large' company supply affordable to ‘small' producers
  • Effective: delivering real food safety improvements for suppliers, offering technical guidance and support, and including a professional audit done by independent auditors.

The scheme is ‘owned' by an industry partnership of the National Farmers Union (NFU), Food & Drink Federation (FDF), British Hospitality Association (BHA), and British Retail Consortium (BRC) and run on a ‘not for profit' basis; being sustainably self-funded through membership.

SFQC offer technical guidance and support (mentoring) to help Scottish food and drink producers achieve SALSA certification. For more information on mentoring click here.

We can also run workshops for groups wishing to find out more about SALSA initially. To discuss this, please contact Hazel Gordon, SALSA Technical Support Manager, direct dial: 07712 575905, Email: hazel.gordon@sfqc.co.uk
